The calendar says July and the thermometer says 100-plus, but high school sports in Texas get underway just days from now.

Workouts may begin on the first Monday in August, other than larger football programs that held spring drills, and this year that comes on Monday, Aug. 1.

High school football, volleyball and cross country teams (some of whom are already hitting the streets) will get underway on Monday, joined by marching band programs as well as cheerleaders who also begin their fall preparations.

Quitman football workouts will be in the evenings from 5 to 9 p.m.

The Blue-White scrimmage followed by media day is Aug. 6. The scrimmage is at 10 a.m., with photos after the scrimmage.

Volleyball will be two-a-days from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and then break until the afternoon session which will be 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The alumni game is Aug. 6 at 1:30 p.m.

The cross country team will be working out at 6 a.m. Aug 1.

Alba-Golden has scheduled practices for volleyball from 7-9 a.m. and 10 a.m.-noon.

Panther football workouts are 8-9:30 a.m. and 10-11:15 a.m.

Mineola teams also have early starts planned, with volleyball getting underway at 7 a.m. and football at 7:30.

The Lady Jackets will host play days Aug. 5 and 6 and their first game Aug. 9.

The first football scrimmage is Aug. 12 and the season begins Aug. 26.

Cross country hosts a meet in Mineola Sept. 2.
