Fewer mixed drink taxes collected in recent quarter
Mixed drink taxes are down in Wood County this year.
The state comptroller’s office released its second quarter report recently, and establishments which collect taxes on the sale of mixed drinks generated $3,592 in taxes for Hawkins, Mineola and Winnsboro.
Hawkins shows an increase from last year, while no taxes have been collected for Quitman.
Last year at this time Quitman taxes were $1,012. No collections have been made since 2019.
The four cities had collected $5,308 at this time last year for the second quarter and $10,206 for the year. So far this year the collections are $8,725.
Establishments serving mixed drinks have been impacted by two rounds of closures ordered by the state as a part of the COVID-19 pandemic response.
For the year Mineola collections were $5,123 compared to $5,998 last year. For the second quarter, collections dropped from $3,365 in 2019 to $1,927 this year.
Winnsboro has dropped from $2,123 last year to $1,823 this year. The quarter was down from $1,100 to $727.
Hawkins saw an increase from $1,073 last year to $1,779 this year and almost doubled in the second quarter from $513 to $938.
