Seven-year-old Sam Borchardt of Mineola happily shows off the trout he just landed while fishing at the Mineola Nature Preserve Saturday morning. Despite a cold front and off-and-on drizzle, determined fishermen of all ages gathered along the banks of Wyatt Pond to reel in some trout that had been stocked. This free children’s fishing day is an annual event sponsored by the city of Mineola and Texas Parks & Wildlife Department.

Little Max Borchardt’s (holding fishing rod) dejection over not having caught any fish quickly dissolves after he lands his first trout and his mother, Veronica, congratulates him. His dad, Joshua, tends to business unhooking his catch and big brother Sam, who had already caught his limit, stands by. Max had persevered and caught his first trout that morning. Coats, umbrellas and ponchos were all part of the cold, damp Saturday morning fishing essentials.
