Lady Jackets trounce Palestine in non-district game

The Mineola Lady Yellowjacket softball squad started with a bang in their non-conference game with Palestine Tuesday evening at the Yellowjacket diamond, and they sure didn’t slow down very much the rest of the way.

After taking a 5-run lead in the first inning, the Lady Jackets’ only got one run in the second and closed the inning leaving the bases loaded. Mineola erupted for six runs in the third to up the ante to 12-0 and finished off a 15-0 run rule victory with three runs in the fourth.

The victory pushed Mineola’s season record to 8-5-1. The Lady Yellowjackets returned to District 12-3A play Friday, hosting Edgewood, were scheduled to be in Grand Saline for a conference match Tuesday (after Monitor presstime) and are due to host Kemp for an early 3:30 p.m. district tilt on Thursday.

In that first inning Mineola sent 11 batters to the plate, collected six singles, got one sacrifice fly and managed three bases on balls to earn its first five runs. In the second the Lady Jackets’ had only one run, and took advantage of one walk and three Palestine errors to tally.

The Mineola bats came back to life in the third inning with six runs being produced on six hits, two doubles and four singles.

Things looked bad for the Lady Yellowjacket offense in the fourth frame as the first two batters up flied out to left field, but then a single, a walk, a triple and another Palestine error allowed three runs to score and end the contest.

For the game, Mineola collected 14 hits, two of them infield singles to go along with nine other singles, two doubles and a triple.

There were three Lady Yellowjackets who managed to get on base every time they came to the plate. Isabella Tresca connected for a single and a triple, made first on a fielder’s choice and an error for a 100 percent on-base percentage. Hannah McKinney also posted a like performance, gaining the base paths on a walk, a double and two errors. Claudia Bafriga was the third Mineola batter with a 100 percent on-base performance, earning a position on the base paths with a walk and two singles in three trips to the plate.

Eden Trent also had a good night at the plate with three singles and one fly out. Kiley Banks posted a double, a walk and a fly out to right field in her three times at bat.
