Food pantry serves summer kids meals

Rose Hill Community Food Pantry invites anyone with children to come and pick up a special summer food pack every Monday until Aug. 25.

The “Milk and Miscellaneous” giveaway comes after Wood County schools, except Winnsboro ISD, announced that they would not be participating in the summer lunch program.

Kris Ware, who, together with her husband Bill, runs the food pantry, says that the special giveaways are not just for Mineola kids, but for any child from Wood County.

“(This food is for) any of them. Any child; anyone under 18,” she said.

“These little kids need something in the summer, being home,” said Ware.

According to Ware, the pantry’s standard Milk and Miscellaneous giveaway includes milk purchased “fresh from the store” the night before, deli meat, bread, candy and much, much more.

The pantry – which calls itself a “hand up pantry, not a handout” pantry – does its summer lunch giveaways every Monday from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. “If you do not have children at home for the summer please do not come to pick up,” they write on their Facebook page.

Winnsboro ISD has also done a summer meal program this year. While they are nearly finished with the program now, administrators say that any Wood County child is more than welcome to come join them on their last meal date, which will be on July 31. The meals are open to anyone under 18 and students with disabilities up to age 21. Breakfast is served at the elementary school from 7:30-8:30 a.m., and lunch is served at the elementary school from 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
