The Winnsboro Lady Red Raiders made five of their first six three-point attempts in the first quarter Friday and never looked back, outscoring Quitman 19-12 and 19-6 in each of the first two quarters, on the way to a 71-38 district win in Quitman.

The victorious Lady Raiders were led by Bailey Swanner's 26 points, including a trio of three-pointers in the first seven minutes of the game.

The Lady Bulldogs got on the scoreboard first when Tori Houck made a five-footer in the lane but Winnsboro's Kelsey Green drilled a three-point shot and Winnsboro never trailed again.

With Quitman down 6-2, Tori Houck made one of two foul shots and then midway through the first quarter she made another basket to get the Lady Bulldogs back to within a point, trailing 6-5 and then the game slipped away quickly.

Swanner hit the first of her first quarter threes and before Quitman could score again, Winnsboro led 11-5. When Swanner finished the first quarter with nine points and Green finished the Winnsboro scoring in the quarter, the Lady Raiders led 19-12, with Quitman getting two points each from Tori Houck and Allie Medlin. as well as a quarter-ending three point shot by Alyssa Harris.

In what was a very physical game by both teams, and Winnsboro outshot Quitman from the foul line in the second quarter, making 10 of their 14 foul shots, while Quitman's Tori Houck made both her foul shots, which were the only time the Lady Bulldogs went to the line in the quarter.

Quitman trailed 38-18 at the half and they played relatively even basketball in the third quarter, with Winnsboro getting a 19-15 edge in the scoring. In the quarter Winnsboro was able to get offense from Swanner (eight points), Quitman answered with six points by Tori Houck and six by her sister, Dawn Houck but the Winnsboro defense took its' toll on Quitman.

Winnsboro opened the third quarter leading 38- 18 and with the Houck sisters combining for five points in the early part of the quarter, Winnsboro led 44-23 before Dawn Houck made a three-pointer that was almost immediately answered by another Winnsboro three-pointer.

The Lady Raiders went on to outscore Quitman 14-5 in the final eight minutes with Tori Houck accounting for three of those points and Shelby Smith the other two.

With Alba-Golden and Winnsboro firmly in the two top spots in district play, Quitman continues to battle for a playoff spot and they will travel to Winona Friday and then they will host Mineola next Tuesday.

That will leave four games on the regular season schedule, at Alba-Golden Jan. 30, hosting Grand Saline Feb. 3 and Edgewood Feb 6 before closing out the regular season at Winnsboro Feb. 10.

In addition to Swanner's offense, Green and Logan Redding each scored 12 points and Timber Brown added 11.

Despite having three players in double figures, the Quitman Lady Bulldogs second-half rally fell short falling 59-47 at Edgewood last Tuesday night.

Edgewood's defensive pressure led them to an early 17-6 lead after one quarter and 33-16 at the half. It was a 17-point margin, 46-29, going into the final stanza. In the fourth quarter, Quitman fought back to within 12 points before falling in the contest.

Dawn Houck led Quitman with 22 while Tori Houck had 12, Alyssa Harris 10, Allie Medlin and Molly Tanner, two each.

Quitman and Edgewood each stood 3-3 in district play after the game.
