In a back-and-forth affair the Mineola Yellowjackets got their first home victory of the 2017-2018 season with a 62-54 win over the Van Vandals last Tuesday.
The Jackets were led by Shaw Franklin and Sean Dennis, who led the Jackets in scoring and rebounding Tuesday night. Franklin finished with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Dennis had 15 points and nine rebounds.
Franklin got the Mineola offense going in the first quarter after Van got out to a 7-0 start as he hit two threes in the opening frame. Franklin also assisted on one of Dennis’ six field goals for the night. Dennis finished the game going 6-7 from the field.
Early on the Jackets struggled with turnovers against Van’s full court 2-2-1 defense leading the Vandals biggest lead of the game.
While the Yellowjackets seemed to be in a great rhythm the Vandals offense seemed just as potent. The Vandals hit four three-pointers in the first half alone as they tried to keep pace with the Jackets.
Mineola point guard Cameron Sorenson also had a good game as he hit back to back threes in the second quarter to help open up a three point lead just before halftime as the Jackets led 30-27.
Sorenson finished with 12 points on the night.
In the second half Mineola’s defense locked down on the Vandals as the Jackets only allowed 24 points the rest of the game.
While Franklin owned the first half, it was Dennis who came up huge in the second half as he repeatedly carved out space in the lane for easy layups, offensive rebounds and put backs.
Two days later the Jackets played in the Brownsboro Tournament going 3-1. On Thursday the Jackets easily beat Grace Community School 74-17. The Jackets then lost on Friday to Royse City 64-55. However the Jackets finished strong on the weekend as they won both their games on Saturday beating Quinlan Ford 53-51 then beating Gladwater 63-41.
The Jackets are now 5-1 and will be looking to keep their strong season going as they face Mt. Vernon and Wills Point this week. The Wills Point game will be at Mineola High School.
