Gene Welton Stone passed away at home in his favorite chair at the age of 76 on Aug. 23, 2020. He was preceded in death by his parents, Weldon Leon “Buck” Stone and Wilma Marie Morrow Stone, along with his oldest brother, Bill Folmar.

Born Aug. 2, 1944 in Quitman, Gene and his wife of 53 years, Lavonia Stone, have lived in the Hawkins area for most of their lives. Gene served in the U.S. Army and later worked for Continental Can where he retired. He enjoyed his family, hunting, fishing, Friday nights with his friends and the Sabine River.

Survivors include his wife, Lavonia Stone of Hawkins; children, Vicki Caldwell and her husband Michael, and Ken Stone and his wife Crissy; his brother, Charles Stone; five grandchildren, Gus Caldwell, Ella Caldwell, Chloe Stone, Brady Stone and Asa Stone; and nephews, Kevin Folmar and Jeff Folmar. Per Gene’s request, there will be no service and his wish to have his ashes spread at his favorite spot will be honored at a later date.
