MINEOLA - Funeral services for George Edward Hannon, 93, formerly of Mineola were held at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin on October 27.
Mr. Hannon died October 19, 2017. He was born in Kemp to Mary Ann and Samuel Hannon on June 29, 1924. At a young age Mr. Hannon relocated with his family to Mineola and after graduating from Mineola High School George “Coach” Hannon entered the University of Texas in 1940 before enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1941 and was in the Pacific Theatre during WW II.
After the war he succeeded Harvey Penick as the University of Texas golf coach and stayed from 1963 to 1982 with the Longhorns, winning many titles as he went on to become a PGA professional. He was inducted into the PGA of America Hall of Fame in 2016, along with numerous other awards.
He was preceded by his parents and wife of 70 years, Jo.
Survivors include a sister, Lou Jarvis, Cedar Hill; nephew David Brown of Cedar Hill; niece Lou Ann Clark, Commerce and numerous grand nephews and families.
