Gilmer man takes Big Bass Splash


The Big Bass Splash survived some rough weather Saturday and a Gilmer man took home the grand prize. Charles Blundell, Gilmer, reeled in his 11.15 pound bass on a rainy Saturday morning during the 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. hour.

Blundell took home 2018 Triton 19TrX powered by Mercury, a new Dodge Ram truck and $7,000 cash. A total of $497,000 in cash and prizes was handed out over the three-day tournament.

Taking second place with a catch of 9.72 pounds was John Pierstoff, Scottsdale, Arizona, who won a 2018 Triton 18TrX powered by Mercury, a Ram truck and $2,000 cash. Third place went to Cory Reynolds, Midland, who won 1 2018 Triton 18TrX powered by Mercury and $1,000 in cash with his 9.28 pound catch.

Taking home a cash prize of $8,000 was Chance Lewis, Longview, with a catch of 9.25 pounds and winning the fifth place prize of $6,000 cash was Jimmy Thomas, Ethelsville, AL. whose catch was 9.17 pounds.

Darrin Longoria, Mineola, was an early bird drawing winner and he received a $200 Academy gift card. Heaviest bass under the slot each day won $5,000 cash each. Those winners were Timothy Weaver, Edgewood, with a catch of 2.76 pounds, Tim Johnson, Alvord, and Tony Reed, Powderly.

Local anglers winning cash during hourly payoffs were: On Friday, Al Jordan , Alba, $500 for sixth place; Johnny Trammel, Quitman, $800 for third place; Bob Taylor, Yantis, $125 16th place; Dan Steele, Winnsboro, $800 for a third place; Dakota McBride, Winnsboro, $350 for 11th; and Steve Hope, Alba, $125, for 16th.

Saturday various local fishermen won during the hourly payoffs. They were: Rick Rhodes, Quitman, $275 for 14th place; Harold Bredman, Yantis, $325 for 12th; Jeff Johnson, Mineola, $800 for third; Kent Smith, Quitman, $375 for 10th; Derek Greer, Mineola, $700 for fourth; and James Mason, Mineola, $100 for 17th.

Winning cash in the Sunday hourly competition were: Ricky Campbell, Alba, $500 for sixth place; William Cruff, Yantis, $325 for 12th; Jack Bowen, Jr., Alba, $275 for 14th; Casey Walls, Mineola, $300 for 13th; Johnny Trammel, Quitman, $425 for eighth; and Jeff Johnson, Mineola, $375 for 10th.

In Little Anglers competition, Kaleb Woodard, Holly Lake Ranch, was second in bass on Friday, third on Saturday and second again on Sunday. Hunter Howard, Alba, took third in perch Saturday and Sunday. Cash Harrison, Quitman, took first place in the catfish division with a 2.51 pound catch.

There was a total of 894 fish weighing 1,836.81 pounds caught during the three day event.
