Lady Bulldogs take third at Troup
The Quitman Lady Bulldogs brought home a third place finish from the Troup Tournament held over the weekend coming from behind McLeod in taking a 3-2 win. Quitman got the winning hit from Hannah Baucom on a line drive bringing in two runs to capture the exciting win.
Brittany Walls had two hits, two runs scored and a stolen base to lead the offense against McLeod. Kendal Wiley and Macy Wilson also added hits in the game.
Quitman defeated Linden-Kildare 18-0, Winona 13-0 and fell to McLeod 5-4 in pool play before falling to Martins Mill 7-0 in bracket play setting the stage for the win over McLeod for third place to earn revenge for the earlier loss in pool play.
In the 18-0 blowout of Linden-Kildare, Quitman banged out 16 hits, Walls going 4-4 scoring four runs and racing for two stolen bases. Shelby Hayes had a 3-3 game with three RBI while Wilson also had a 3-3 outing with two doubles and six RBI. Madalyn Spears and Wiley each added 2-3 days with Spears getting a double and Wiley bringing in four RBI.
Baucom tossed a no-hitter in the game. “I was really proud of how we hit the ball. We ran the bases well and got good pitching from Hannah Baucom,” Coach Chris Veach said. “It was a good way to start the tournament.”
In the second pool play game, a last-inning rally fell short as the Lady Bulldogs fell to McLeod 5-4. A two-run home run by Spears in the last inning brought the score to 5-4, but the Lady Bulldogs could not get another run in. “We scored two runs early, but the bats went silent until our last at bat,” Veach noted. “It was a tough loss, letting that one slip away. We played pretty good defense for the most part.”
The Lady Bulldogs came back after the tough loss to pin a 13-0 smackdown of Winona. Spears, Walls Wiley, Hayes and Hannah Hardy each had two hits. Spears had two doubles to lead the way.
“It was great to come back after the tough loss to McLeod and hit the ball well to finish off the day,” Veach added.
Quitman was to be back at home Tuesday after Monitor press time to take on the Alba-Golden Lady Panthers in a district battle at 6 p.m. and will continue district play Friday at Eustace at 6 p.m.
