Spring conference brings many awards for local DAR
Delegates and two members of the Elizabeth Denton English Chapter recently attended the annual Texas Society Daughters of the American Revolution State Conference in Dallas.
The conference revolves around education and chapter awards for service as well as social events and guest speakers.
The local chapter received numerous awards and several members received special recognition
Foremost among the awards is the chapter’s first place in state for its 75th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor Commemoration. Last year during the national commemoration, members provided a lunch and program at the Watkins-Logan VA Facility in Tyler for all WWII veterans with an official anniversary pin from the USS Arizona Memorial given to each. A separate commemoration of Pearl Harbor was presented at a chapter meeting. Thanks to the Commemorative Events committee, chaired by Kelly Lindsey, the event is now being considered for the South Central Division of the National Society.
Additional awards were presented to Lindsey, registrar and regent-elect for Outstanding Correspondent Docent for the National Society’s Museum and for Outstanding Service in the Junior American Citizen program which involves Girl Scouts and elementary students.
Mary Sockwell, treasurer, was recognized with an appreciation award and Susan Few was recognized as regent.
Chapter activities involving veterans received many awards, including Generous Support of veterans at the Bonham VA Hospital and Watkins-Logan in Tyler. The chapter also received a second place for Most Adult Volunteers for Veterans, with 42 members participating; third place for Most Adult Volunteer Hours with 2,039, and a certificate for Recognition of Veterans in Mineola and Winnsboro. Twenty-four additional award certificates were received covering topics from the Constitution Week, Good Citizens, the Chapter website, Facebook page, electronic yearbook, and many other activities.
Susan Few, regent, summed up the many awards by thanking the chairpersons of each of the committees as well as all the chapter members. “I commend our members for their enthusiasm, finding time in their lives for DAR and their generosity to participate in activities. It’s our entire membership winning these awards,” she said.
