Grand Saline too salty for Quitman Bulldogs, 43-0
An injury-riddled Quitman team was overpowered by a strong Grand Saline defense handing the Bulldogs their second shutout loss in two weeks by a 43-0 score. Quitman had at least six starters out due to injury including leading rushers Mason Reynolds and Ford Tannebaum.
Grand Saline took the opening kick-off but was unable to get a first down as the Bulldog defense forced a punt and Quitman took over on their own 22-yard line. After a two yard run by Wyatt Hightower, sophomore quarterback Kamron Crockett ran for 10 yards and first down. The Indians held and Bulldog Carson Dickens got off a good 41-yard punt.
Grand Saline took over on their own 29 yard-line and went on a nine-play drive scoring on a 46-yard pass from Jase Melton to Caleb Amaya and took a 7-0 lead with 2:51 left in the quarter.
The Indians scored again on the first play of the second quarter on a 17-yard run by Amaya making it 14-0. Amaya continued his stellar game with a 53-yard TD run with 6:13 to go in the half. Melton followed that with a touchdown toss to Hudson Griffon with just 26 seconds left in the half leaving the score 29-0 in favor of the Indians.
The Quitman offense was not able to move the entire contest as the Indians controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the football.
Grand Saline had a 10-play drive in the third quarter and scored on a Melton six-yard run followed by a 25-yard scoring run by Preston Anderson with 2:44 to go in the third period. There was no scoring in the final quarter.
Coach Shane Webber was disappointed in the outcome. “Give Grand Saline credit, the just manhandled us in every part of the game. We could not get anything going the whole night,” Webber said.
The win was the first for Grand Saline making them 1-6 on the year while the Bulldogs dropped to 4-4 for the season.
The Bulldogs have a much-needed bye this week hoping to have some of their injured players able to return at Troup.
“We hope we can get some of those kids back,” Webber noted. “Troup is going to be tough. They are coming off a big win over Harmony.”
Webber is hoping to have quarterback Ford Tannebaum and running back Mason Reynolds back in the line-up. Alex Burman is set to finally get some action after suffering through medical problems since the beginning of the season. It is also hoped big lineman Johnata Jones will be able to return after he has an MRI this week.
The Bulldogs head to Troup Oct. 29 to take on a Tiger team which just defeated Harmony 28-22 followed by a Senior Night battle in the season finale at home against fifth-ranked and undefeated West Rusk Nov. 5.
