Crime Stoppers Safety Tip
Wood County Crime Stoppers has posted information in the past about scams. Nearly all of these scams originate far outside of Texas and most often outside the United States. One recent scam here in Wood County involved a citizen receiving a phone call stating they had won a cash prize from Publishers Clearing House. The citizen was instructed to obtain a prepaid charge card and provide the card number to the caller not one time but three different times. The victim was told this was a fee for the cash prize. This scam was being operated in Jamaica. Recovering money from victims in this type of scam is highly unlikely. You may ask yourself how can somebody fall for this but people do every day in this country. Free cash money is what lures victims. Once the scammer has the prepaid card information the money is gone. The old saying "if it sounds too good to be true it probably is" is a good rule of thumb. Also be weary of anyone who tells you that you have won a contest that you do not remember entering.
