Grand Saline pounds Lady Jackets, 11-4, Friday

The Grand Saline Lady Indians started fast building up a 9-3 lead after three innings, and coasted on home to notch an ll-4 victory over Mineola Friday night in Mineola.

The District 12-3A contest was no contest at all after the second inning. Grand Saline plated one run in the top of the first and Mineola answered with two in the bottom half of the frames.

In the top of the second the Lady Indians pushed four more runs across to effectively put the game on ice. In the top of the third Grand Saline pounded on ace starting pitcher Sydnie Bell to the point that relief came in the form of freshman Claudia Barriga.

Barriga showed signs of inexperience with lots of high pitches, still she managed to come up with a credible relief performance. She came in with no outs, two runs in, and a runner on second. That runner did cross the plate on a single, but not another Lady Indian scored as a fielder’s choice, a strike-out and a ground-out ended the third.

Grand saline had a three-up, three-down fourth inning, on two fly balls to center and a short hit to first ground out. In the fifth two singles and a double got two runs across for Grand Saline and the tally jumped to 11-4, where it remained for the rest of the game. Barriga gave up two hits and no runs in the sixth and one hit and no runs in the seventh.

The Lady Yellowjackets were scheduled to visit Kemp Tuesday, host Quitman on Friday and then close out the regular season on April 18 at 6 p.m. in Alba against the Alba-Golden Lady Panthers.
