Mineola and Quitman golf teams placed in the first tournament of the season on March 7 at The Links at Land’s End. The par 71, 6,654-yard course presented a formidable challenge with a chilling wind steadily blowing off Lake Fork.

Hughes Springs won the girls team medal with a combined 418 score. Mineola placed second and Quitman third in the girls team competition.

Rains High School took the boys team trophy with a 391 combined score. Quitman finished in second with a 411, and Harmony rounded out the top three.

Hannah McKinney of Hughes Springs shot a 90 to take the girls individual title, and Dalton Graf of Redwater recorded an 86 to secure the boys title. Quitman’s Josh Medlin placed third with an outstanding round of 89.

The second-place Mineola girls team consisted of Valerie Garcia (112), Ava Johnson (110), Makayla Mahlstadt (117), Makenzie Mahlstadt (116), and Sunni Ruffin (117). Quitman’s Rhiana Bradshaw (120), Lillie Danner (115), Abby Dobbs (115) and Julia Simpkins (114) captured the third-place medal.

Quitman’s Dalton Brandon (119), Aiden Corrier (100), Josh Medlin (89) and Parker Simpkins (103) recorded the third-place finish. Quitman golf coach Mark Fatheree praised both his girls and boys teams. The girls were district champions in 2018 and the boys were runners-up. Fatheree noted that two of his student-athletes were unable to compete due to a conflict with the Houston FFA show. Quitman Athletic Director Bryan Oakes was on site to render support for his teams.

The Alba-Golden Invitational was March 11 at Mineola Country Club. The Mineola Invitational follows on March 18, also at Mineola.
