Quitman Arboretum and Botanical Gardens

Autumn cleaning continues as we slowly but surely help the gardens and surrounding areas recover from hog damage. Donated pavers give new shape to re-established gardens and many favorite plants are now putting on their fall show. If you follow Lin Grado’s column, you already know about the beautiful rose of sharon that graces the front yard and the returning hardy hibiscus that get to “strut their stuff.”

Power washing and weeks of hard work have helped to re-establish the pergola to its original beauty. This area is located behind the Stinson House, and it can be accessed by walking over the footbridge with the river stone beneath. If you have not visited this corner of the garden, now is the perfect time. Much still needs to be accomplished and the volunteers who have taken on this project are appreciated by all concerned.

Inside the Stinson House you will find every nook and cranny frilled with treasures for the upcoming yard sale. On Saturday, Sept. 29, the annual Fall Yard Sale will present its wares. Please come out and help support this important fundraiser as a volunteer or shopper or both. Donations are still being accepted (no clothes or shoes please). We are there every Wednesday. The coffee is on. Remember, no experience is necessary, and we would love to get to know you.
