Inside and Outside the Picket Fence

Quitman Arboretum and Botanical Gardens

Spring is really just around the corner. I could feel it in the air as I worked the gardens at the Arboretum yesterday. Warm temperatures and soft winds from the south combined to make it one of those perfect days you wish would never end. So many of our volunteer friends arrived with rakes, drop cloths, gloves and determination to clear away some of the winter brush and debris. I am always so tickled to see the tips of day lilies poking through the soil. New growth is appearing on the roses and at the base of many of the perennials.

The Quitman Arboretum will be holding a FREE community workshop on February 15th. The focus of this workshop will be pruning roses. I invite you to mark this date on your calendar, and join us at 9:00 in the rose gardens at the front of the Arboretum. Bring your gloves and pruning shears or clippers and we will provide the information.

Friends of the Arboretum are busy with preparations for the upcoming Quitman Chamber of Commerce Banquet, and we are also planning, decorating, and preparing for the second annual Valentine’s Dinner to be held in the historic Stinson House.

Keep up with all the news and projects at www.quitmanarboretum.com, our Facebook page and our newly installed Instagram feed. Remember, we are in the gardens every Wednesday from 9 until noon. The coffee is always on - we provide the cups and the good company.
