The Mineola Yellowjackets Baseball Team had a dominant three days as they won three of four games during the 2018 Quitman Baseball Tournament this past weekend.
The Jackets earned victories over Como-Pickton and Harleton on Thursday, then won against Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill Friday, before eventually losing to Mt. Vernon on Saturday.
In all three victories the Jackets offense was clicking on all cylinders as the team scored at least six runs in each victory. In the only game they didn’t score six runs or more they lost 4-2, to Mt. Vernon.
On Thursday morning the Jackets picked up a 6-1 win over Como-Pickton largely thanks to a strong third inning as the Jackets scored four runs in the frame before picking up two insurance runs in the sixth inning to seal their win.
Against Como-Pickton River Simonek and Cody Ford led the Jackets with two hits apiece, Simonek also had two walks and a run batted in as well. Cole Castleberry led Mineola in the game with two RBI. The Jackets racked up 10 hits in total for the game. Bailey Mischnick pitched all six innings giving up just two hits while striking out seven batters. Mischinick also had 16 first-pitch strikes.
Later Thursday afternoon the Jackets faced Harleton who took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning as they found themselves behind for the first time in the tournament. However the Jackets responded with a four-run second inning and a three-run third inning as they eventually beat Harleton 9-3.
Cody Ford led Mineola again with two hits. Dalton Rodgers led Mineola with three RBI. Jacob Dabbs also had a solid game as he had a hit, a walk and an RBI.
Cody Ford pitched all four innings played while recording six strike outs, allowing five hits, as he threw 10 first-pitch strikes.
In the final game of the day on Friday the Jackets beat Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill 14-8. After both teams scored three runs each in the first two innings, the Jackets exploded for 11 runs in the third inning. Simonek and Preston Lankford led the Jackets with two hits and three RBI apiece.
Castleberry pitched four innings striking out four while giving up six runs and two walks.
In their final game of the weekend the Jackets lost 4-2 after giving up all four runs in the opening inning. Castleberry and Cody Ford each had one hit apiece. Jake Ford and Rodgers scored both runs for the Jackets in the loss.
Their next game will be on the road Friday against Brownsboro. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
