The Mineola Lady Jackets got impressive performances from senior Bri McCalla and freshman Sabria Dean last week in a close 68-63 loss to the Scurry-Rosser Lady Cats and a convincing 59-45 win against the Edgewood Lady Dogs.

The Lady Jackets got out to a quick start in part to McCalla’s hot shooting. Mineola hit four three-pointers to begin the game which included three by McCalla. The Lady Jackets went on a 12-2 run in the first period before Edgewood settled down and started hitting shots.

The second period began cold as neither team could hit a shot in the first four minutes. Edgewood managed to claw their way back later in the period and trailed the Lady Jackets by four points at halftime.

“We had great energy at the beginning of the game,” Dunn said. “We shot the ball extremely well and it carried over to the second half.”

Mineola definitely got their fire back during halftime and proceeded to extend the gap with a 10-0 run to start the third period. The Lady Jackets were patient and played smart defense in the final period resulting in the victory for Mineola.

McCalla scored 15 of her 20 points in the first half to lead the Lady Jackets in the win. Sabria Dean continues to impress in her freshman season by adding 19 points. Meghan Brewington had six points, Lauren Almuete had five points, Jessiah Riley had four points and Caitlyn Hudson had two points to round out the scoring for Mineola.

In Tuesday’s game, Scurry-Rosser ran out to a 23-12 lead after the first period but Mineola fought back in the second period to pull within three points at halftime. The Lady Jackets came out hot in the third period outscoring Edgewood 20-14 and took a three-point lead into the final period. Scurry-Rosser retook the lead in the fourth period and secured the victory over the Lady Jackets.

“We played well,” said Head Coach Billy Dunn. “We competed hard and just ran out of gas at the end.”

McCalla had a team-high 24 points with Dean adding 17 points. Also contributing for the Lady Jackets were Riley with 10 points, Almuete with seven points and Brewington with two points. Cyndi Butler had two points and Vanessa Spurgeon had one point to round out the scoring for Mineola.

Mineola (16-7, 2-3) traveled to Eustace Tuesday, after Monitor press time, and hosts county and district rival Quitman (4-15, 1-4) Friday.
