Jarvis Christian College held its annual Unity Prayer Breakfast on Saturday, Jan. 18, to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 

Each year, the college selects individuals and organizations that depict the character of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

This year, Dr. Lester C. Newman, president of Jarvis, presented the Kiwanis Clubs of Mineola and Holly Lake with awards recognizing their organization of and partnered work with the Circle K International (CKI) Club of Jarvis Christian College.

The Kiwanis Clubs have worked with students on various projects around the school and throughout Wood County. Together, they have built ramps for the disabled, partnered with two local senior nursing facilities, wrote letters to and visited veterans, volunteered at food banks and beautified the Jarvis Parent Student Apartment flower beds. More projects are planned for the spring.

Representing the Mineola Kiwanis were Kevin White, Pam Thurman, Joyce Curry and Sam Curry. Holly Lake Kiwanians included George Hensen, Dr. Alan McNear and Linda Hernandez. 

Hernandez serves as faculty advisor to the Jarvis Circle K International Club, one of 500 clubs around the world. CKI is the world’s largest student-led collegiate service organization. Founded on the principals of service, leadership and fellowship, they have the highest per member service hours average of any Kiwanis-family club.
