The Lady Hawks of Hawkins got a little revenge last Tuesday against Fruitvale – who beat Hawkins a week prior in the Hawkins Classic – and opened District 16-2A play with a victory over rival Big Sandy Friday.

Hawkins defeated Fruitvale 44-43 last Tuesday with help from Raeli Smith’s free throw that clinched the victory for the Lady Hawks. Smith had a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds, scoring nine of her points in the final period.

Hawkins found themselves trailing 27-19 at halftime but fought back and rallied in the fourth period thanks in part to a momentum swinging 10-2 run.

Destiny Chapman also recorded a double-double for the Lady Hawks with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Jaycee Cheshire added five points, a steal and a block and Emily Moore had five points, nine rebounds and three steals. Other contributors for the Lady Hawks were Silvia Montgomery with four points, five rebounds and two steals, Christian Harris with two points and two rebounds and Hannah Langford with one point.

Hannah Langford scored nine points and hit a clutch three-pointer in the fourth period to lead Hawkins to a 34-29 district opening victory over Big Sandy.

Langford was not alone in her efforts with Moore adding eight points, four rebounds and a steal and Destiny Chapman contributing five points and six rebounds. Smith had four points, seven rebounds and four steals, Jaycee Cheshire had three points, three rebounds and a steal and Silvia Montgomery had a point. Harlie Conover had four points and two assists to round out the scoring for the Hawkins.

The Lady Hawks (9-9, 1-0) traveled to Union Grove Tuesday, after Monitor press time, and host Overton Friday in Hawkins.
