Kiwanis chili cookoff features first responders

Friday, April 23 will be the last chance to taste great chili of area cooks. In this case they will be first responders from around the area competing to see whose chili is the best. First responders include fire departments from Alba, Mineola, Hainesville, Lands End and UT Health East Texas EMS.

Doors open for the public at 6 p.m. at the Mineola Civic Center with admission of $5. Sliced desserts will be available for $1. The public will decide the “People’s Choice” award with their tips for best tasting chili. Celebrity judges will decide on “Best Tasting Chili” and “Best Looking Booth.”

In addition, a silent auction with lots of great items and a live dessert auction will be held. Tickets may be purchased at the door or from members of the Mineola Kiwanis Club.

Sponsors include City National Bank, Mineola Community Bank, First National Bank of East Texas, Mineola Dairy Queen, Trophy Creek Real Estate-Kevin White, Brad and Dawn McCampbell, Monica Cook State Farm Insurance, Sam and Joyce Curry, Rosehill Apartments, UT Health EMS, Mineola Fire Department and the Mineola Civic Center. Special Olympics returns in style

Symphonic band presents Christmas concert

Come on over to Mineola’s beautiful Historic Select Theater and hear the Lake Country Symphonic Band’s Christmasy “Everything Christmas” concert.

Concerts are Sunday, Dec. 17, at 2 p.m. and Tuesday evening, Dec. 19, at 7:30 p.m. Mike Holbrook is back in the director’s seat, so it’s sure to be a fun-filled couple of hours.
