Lady Bulldogs blitz Winona
The Quitman Lady Bulldogs made quick work of Winona in Tuesday’s District 13-3A volleyball win Oct. 6. Quitman trounced the Lady Wildcats 25-6, 25-9, 25-23.
Strong serving by the Lady Bulldogs kept Winona off balance the entire match. Quitman was successful hitting for 22 aces.
Ava Burroughs’ bullet-like serves were difficult for the Lady Wildcats to handle. Lindsey Hornaday used her strong jump serves for six aces. Others with strong serves were Brooklyn Marcee who had four aces, Lucy Brannon hit for three aces, and Halie Davis added on ace.
Quitman took an early 8-2 lead and extended it to 14-3 after back-to-back aces by Burroughs. A Marcee kill made it a 16-4 score, and Quitman went on to the 25-6 first set win.
In the second set with the score tied at 4-4, the Lady Bulldogs went on a scoring rampage with nine consecutive points to make it 13-4. The Lady Bulldogs went on to take a 25-9 win.
Winona played a better third set, but the Lady Bulldogs continued their domination of the match. The win gave Quitman a 2-3 district slate as they move into the second round of play.
Further stats for the contest were Burroughs 13 kills and eight aces; Davis four kills and one ace; Spears nine assists and two digs; Marcee one block, one kill, four aces and three digs; Lindsey Hornaday one kill, six aces, one assist and four digs; and Brannon three aces, seven assists and two digs.
The second round of play started against Harmony, and the Lady Eagles showed why they are fighting for the top spot in district 13-3A.
Harmony swept the Lady Bulldogs at Delbert Ballard Memorial Gym Friday evening by the scores of 15-25, 14-25 and 10-25.
For Quitman, Hornaday had four kills, one ace and seven digs; Marcee three kills and eight digs; Spears one kill, four assists and seven digs; and Burroughs five kills, seven digs and one block.
