Lady Bulldogs chalk up two more district wins

The Quitman Lady Bulldogs moved to 3-1 in district action with a win over Harmony and a forfeit from a Winona team that could not field a squad.

The Lady Bulldogs used a 16-6 second quarter run to take a 28-14 lead at the half and never looked back. The Lady Bulldogs used a hustling and ball-hawking defense to hold back the Lady Eagles.

After taking the big lead at the half Quitman came out firing again in the third quarter led by Maddy Pence’s pair of triples to take a 44-19 edge going into the final quarter. Coach Blake Hamrick emptied the bench in the final quarter.

Harmony was able to muster five points in the fourth quarter to make the final 44-24 tally. Quitman did not score in the final quarter, but played more excellent defense holding the Lady Eagles in check.

Seniors Pence and Kaysi Parker led Quitman. Pence scored 16 points going 5-8 on three-point shots and adding a free throw. Parker added nine points and brought down eight rebounds. Sophomore Sadie VanderSchaaf did a great job distributing the ball in recording five assists while scoring five points.

“I thought our energy was down and I was a little disappointed with that. We shot the ball really well and that was a huge difference,” Hamrick said. “When we got out and ran we looked good in transition. We just have to try to do that more consistently.”

The team was set to play Winona Friday, but the Lady Wildcats were unable to field a full team. Things get a lot more difficult this week as the Lady Bulldogs played Mt. Vernon Tuesday and travel to state-ranked Winnsboro Friday.
