The Quitman Lady Bulldogs dropped a pair of district games falling to Winnsboro on Tuesday and Mt. Vernon Friday.
Mt. Vernon 42, Quitman 26
A scrambling and aggressive Mt. Vernon press put the Quitman Lady Bulldogs in an early 17-0 first quarter deficit. It was a no-quit Lady Bulldog team that fought back after the early disaster.
Ava Burroughs hit the Lady Bulldog’s first bucket with 7:35 left in the second quarter. Kynlee Love came back with another bucket to make it 17-4. Mt. Vernon got nine second quarter points, all on three-pointers by Peyton Steen, to take a 26-6 lead at intermission.
The Lady Bulldogs came back determined to make a run at the Lady Tigers. Quitman also began to play tough defense and outscored Mt. Vernon 22-16 in the second half. Ava Burroughs scored 12 of her team leading 16 points in the second half as the Lady Tigers took a 38-17 edge into the final quarter.
Winnsboro 75, Quitman 34
A determined Lady Bulldog team fought hard against the state’s fourth-ranked Lady Raiders of Winnsboro. With the Lady Raiders’ Laiken Allen and Faith Acker playing strong from outside and inside Quitman fell behind Winnsboro 14-2. Acker hit for eight points inside and Allen made a pair of triples.
Allen continued her hot hand the entire game scoring 31 points with 27 points from three-point shots. She made six shots from beyond the arc in the first half. Acker, a 6’1” sophomore, had 22 points.
Winnsboro’s press caused problems for the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Raiders led at the half 46-10 and 64-18 after three quarters. Quitman’s best quarter was the fourth when they added 16 points to 11 for Winnsboro.
Burroughs had 10 points and nine rebounds while Love, Maddy Pence and Reiny Luman each had six points. Ashley Davis added four points and Lindsey Hornaday two.
The Lady Bulldogs are home against Harmony Friday after playing at Mineola on Tuesday night.
