The Quitman Lady Bulldogs are headed to the post season for the first time in a decade, clinching the spot with a 76-19 domination of Winona at Delbert Ballard gym Friday night. Combined with Mt. Vernon’s win over Harmony, the Lady Bulldogs secured the final playoff berth in District 13-3A.

Quitman Head Coach Blake Hamrick is proud of his team.

“I thought the girls came out and played solid from start to finish,” he said. “Those kind of games are fun when everyone is able to get involved and contribute. For us to have the opportunity at the playoffs is a huge testament to the work the girls have put in all season. The beginning of the season was a struggle, and because of their hard work we were able to continue improving, and we are hitting our stride. Even a chance at the playoffs is a huge step forward from where we started. And to be able to get in the playoffs is incredible for those girls to get to experience it for the first time ever.”

At press time, New Boston, DeKalb and Paul Pewitt were in a three-way tie for first in District 14-3A. The first place team will be the Lady Bulldog bidistrict opponent.

Against Winona, the Lady Bulldogs jumped to an 8-0 lead on a pair of buckets by Ava Burroughs and one each from Maddy Pence and Ashley Davis. After a Winona basket, Quitman reeled off 10 consecutive points to take a 20-2 lead and ended the quarter ahead 26-6. Six Lady Bulldogs got in the scoring column in the first quarter, sparking the all-around team effort.

The Quitman defense continued to wreak havoc on Winona, causing multiple turnovers. The team rattled off 24 second quarter points to take a 50-12 lead at the half. The Lady Bulldogs continued to score in the third quarter and took a 71-14 lead into the final quarter after outscoring Winona 21-2 in the third quarter.

The Lady Bulldogs pulled off the press in the final quarter, and the game ended with Quitman leading 76-19.

Burroughs had 27 points with Pence adding 13 and Reiny Luman 11 to lead the Lady Bulldogs.

After a Friday night battle with district leader and third-ranked Winnsboro on the road, the Lady Bulldogs will begin work for their bidistrict match next week.
