The Quitman Lady Bulldogs faced off against their second top 20 team in a week and fell to the Rains Lady Cats 61-22 on the road Saturday. The game was played on Saturday due to incoming inclement weather Friday evening.

Rains opened the game with a 7-0 run and never looked back. The first quarter score ended with the Lady Cats up 12-3. The second quarter was much the same as the first with Rains having a 12-5 advantage to lead 24-8 at the half. The Rains defense hounded the Lady Bulldogs the entire game causing numerous turnovers and hurried shots.

The Rains defense really went to work in the third quarter holding Quitman without a field goal and only two free throws by Maddy Whitehurst. Rains had 21 third quarter points. Senior Whitehurst was the Quitman offense as she scored 16 points with Ava Burroughs adding four and Julia Simpkins two.

Quitman played a much better final quarter scoring 12 points, but Rains added 16.

“We played two top 20 teams in the state this week, and it showed. I thought we started well against Edgewood earlier this week, but I was disappointed how we finished,” Head Coach Blake Hamrick said. “I thought against Rains we started slow and finished strong. It’s tough when teams force you to do things you’re uncomfortable with but have to figure out a way to overcome that. We have a long way to go and it showed in our play this week.”

The Lady Bulldogs took on Alba-Golden Tuesday night followed by a road tilt against another ranked team, Mineola, who is undefeated in district action.
