Lady Bulldogs fall to Winnsboro, playoffs next
The Quitman Lady Bulldogs were defeated by the state’s third-ranked Lady Raiders of Winnsboro 76-36 Friday night in a game played at Winnsboro’s beautiful new facility at the high school.
An effective full court press gave the Lady Raiders a 23-4 first quarter advantage and by halftime, Winnsboro led 37-9. Quitman was led by Maddy Pence’s 14 points. Junior post Ava Burroughs was injured and sat out the second half after taking a tumble with Winnsboro post Faith Acker.
Winnsboro took a dominating 58-22 lead into the final quarter, but the Lady Bulldogs continued to play hard, scoring 14 fourth-quarter points.
Quitman will be the fourth and final playoff team from District 13-3A and will face the undetermined (at press time) number one seed from District 14-3A. Paul Pewitt, New Boston and DeKalb are tied for the top spot with a final seeding position to be determined Tuesday.
The bi-district game has been tentatively set Thursday at Prairiland at 8 p.m. against Paul Pewitt or DeKalb.
