Quitman’s Lady Bulldogs got their season rolling with a pair of early season wins. After a 37-33 road win at Boles Tuesday, the Lady Bulldogs came back Saturday to race past Overton 54-32 playing with hustle and determination.

Juniors Shelby Hayes and Maddy Whitehurst sparked the team on both ends of the floor in the win over Overton, but Coach Amanda Hodge’s team played with a well-balanced team effort.

Overton got the first bucket on a quick lay-up to lead 2-0, but Quitman tied the game at 2-2 on a pair of Ava Burroughs free throws. The Lady Mustangs knocked down a three point shot and three free throws to take an 8-2 advantage with just over four minutes left in the quarter.

That’s when Whitehurst ripped a pair of triples and a free throw to give Quitman a 9-8 lead with 2:47 to go in the opening period. Quitman led 15-8 after the first quarter. They would get the first two points of the second quarter on a basket by Utopia Henry giving them a 15-0 run and a lead of 17-8.

Quitman went on to take a lead of 31-16 at intermission. A pair of buckets by Henry and a long range trey from Whitehurst put Quitman ahead 38-20 with 4:30 left in the quarter. Hayes hit a three pointer followed by a steal and layup to put Quitman ahead 43-22. Hayes added a jump shot with 1:20 to go in the third stanza giving the Lady Bulldogs a 45-24 lead going into the final eight minutes.

Henry added a pair of fourth quarter buckets and Lucy Brannon scored the final three points after grabbing an offensive rebound and putting it back in for two followed by a free throw giving Quitman the final 54-32 win.

Hayes led the scoring parade for Quitman with 13 points while Whitehurst added 12 and eight to lead the Lady Bulldogs on offense.

After a home outing against Wills Point Tuesday, the Lady Bulldogs travel to Grand Saline for tournament play Thursday through Saturday.
