Lady Bulldogs open basketball season 1-1
The Quitman Lady Bulldogs started basketball season with games Friday and Saturday, defeating Grand Saline and falling to Como-Pickton.
On Friday, the Lady Bulldogs streaked to a 21-1 first quarter advantage over former district foe Grand Saline to spark the 61-20 dominating victory. Quitman led 32-9 at the half and 46-13 after three quarters.
Junior Ava Burroughs opened the season with a stellar performance scoring 27 points on 12-17 shooting from the floor and 3-4 free throws and added seven rebounds. Senior Lindsey Hornaday added 10 points, four rebounds and a healthy seven assists. Madyson Pence added eight points and 10 rebounds. Kaysi Parker had seven points and six rebounds along with three assists.
It was a different story Saturday with Como-Pickton using a big 18-4 second quarter advantage to take a 25-12 halftime lead from which the Lady Bulldogs couldn’t recover. The Lady Eagles took the win 41-29.
Burroughs led the scoring with 11 points followed by Kynlee Love and Pence with five each, Parker with four and Ashley Davis and Bonnie VanderSchaff with two apiece.
Head Coach Blake Hamrick was glad to get the season underway.
“I thought we came out and played really well on Friday,” he said. “It was a great way to start off the season, and everyone on the team contributed in some way. Saturday we came out flat and sloppy and it showed. Saturday was good because we got exposed a bit and proved we still have a lot to work on. It’s still early and I am excited about this group of girls and finally being able to get the season started.”
