Lady Bulldogs ready for playoffs

The Quitman Lady Bulldogs ended their regular season Friday night with convincing win over Mineola 3-0 with scores of 25-12, 25-9, 25-14. “We are so excited to switch gears and start playoffs! This is what you start working for August 1 and it is finally here,” Head Coach Ashlee Lingo said.

Quitman got going early in the first set when a powerful kill shot by Madalyn Spears gave them a 6-3 lead. Shelby Hayes set up a kill by Maddy Whitehurst to put Quitman up 8-5. Hayes came up to serve with the Lady Bulldogs leading 13-11 and Quitman scored the next nine points togive them a 22-11 lead. Freshman middle blocker Ava Burroughs had a kill to end the first set at 25-12.

In the second set Jentri Jackson served first and the Lady Bulldogs reeled off eight consecutive points to take an 8-0 lead when Mineola scored. Emma VanBecelare made a great hustle play on a return shot giving Quitman a 17-7 lead. Whitehurst made a solid play at the net for a score to extend Quitman’s lead to 22-8 and the final ended 25-9 in the second set.

The young Mineola squad would not give in and hustled throughout the contest making several good plays before finally falling to the Lady Bulldogs in the last set 25-14.

Stats for the match were: Spears six kills, 15 digs, one ace; Jackson 11 digs, three kills, one ace; Hayes four digs, three kills, one ace, 23 assists; Burroughs three digs, five kills, three aces, two blocks; Whitehurst five digs, four kills, two aces, one block; VanBecelaere two digs; Julia Simpkins five kills; Abby Dobbs 12 digs, one ace; and Lindsey Hornaday five digs, one kill.

The Quitman JV defeated Mineola 25-10, 14-25, 25-11.

Quitman has a warm-up game against Class 4A Paris this Friday at Ballard Gym beginning at 5 p.m.

The Lady Bulldogs will face either Dallas Madison or Life Oak Cliff in the opening bi-district round of the state playoffs next week on either Oct. 29 or 30.

Quitman finished the year 24-12 for the season and 10-2 in district 12-3A with both losses to state-ranked and district champion Edgewood.
