The Quitman Lady Bulldogs started the 2017-2018 season with a win at Overton and a loss at home Class 4A Tatum Saturday evening.

New Quitman Head Girl’s Basketball Coach Amanda Rucker goes into to her first year at Quitman with a roster filled with younger players. However the team does have experienced seniors, forward Molly Tanner and guard Aubrey Gilbreath, along with juniors Utopia Henry, Abby Dobbs, Shelby Compton and Madalyn Spears round out the upperclassmen.

Henry and Dobbs have varsity experience and this is Compton’s and Spears’ first varsity action. Rucker also has the talented younger underclassmen with sophomores Shelby Hayes and Julia Simpkins along with freshmen Lindsey Hornaday, Kynlee Love and Lucy Brannon.

In the season opener, the Lady Bulldogs used a 22-6 run in the second and third quarters to overcome an early 10-6 deficit to Overton pulling away with a 34-23 victory. The Lady Bulldogs played a pressure defense and rotated all the players throughout the game to wear down the Lady Mustangs and come away with the win.

Tatum was coming off a 66-41 win over Class 5A Nacogdoches. The Lady Eagles started fast using a pressure full-court press. Quitman’s Gilbreath hit a bucket with 32 seconds to go in the first quarter as Tatum raced to a 22-2 lead. Tatum continued to press causing numerous Quitman turnovers and led 52-2 at the half.

Quitman’s Tanner picked up three points for the Lady Bulldogs on a bucket and a free throw in the second half as Tatum won the game 79-5. Tanner worked hard on the boards, bringing down numerous defensive rebounds. The Lady Eagles hit on eight three-point shots in the win.

Quitman travels to Wills Point to take on another class 4A squad Tuesday followed by a varsity tournament at Rains Monday and Tuesday. District 12-3A play begins Dec. 12 at Kemp.
