Lady Bulldogs split games over holiday week
The Quitman Lady Bulldogs went 1-1 during Thanksgiving break with their second win over Grand Saline and a loss to Kemp.
Still without the services of Ava Burroughs and Reiny Luman, the Lady Bulldogs showed their talents in a solid 37-20 win over Grand Saline. They had defeated the Lady Indians earlier in non-district play.
Maddy Pence and Kynlee Love led the Lady Bulldogs on offense with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Pence added nine rebounds and Love had six caroms for Quitman. Love was a leader on the floor throughout the game.
Freshman Ashley Davis scored three points and led the team in assists with four and four steals on defense. Kaysi Parker added seven points and eight rebounds for the Lady ‘Dogs. The Lady Bulldogs secured the win despite having 30 turnovers, but their hustle on the floor at all times made the difference in the 17-point win.
“Obviously we are struggling to score right now as a team, and it shows. We do have a lot of youth out on the floor and are playing shorthanded, but at the end of the day we can’t make excuses for ourselves. We as a team and a coaching staff have to figure out how to get things rolling,” Coach Blake Hamrick said. “I thought against Kemp our inexperience showed throughout the whole game but hopefully learned and grew from it. Against Grand Saline we came out and played a lot harder, still struggled to score, but we played hard, and that’s what I expect every game. Kynlee Love has done an incredible job of taking on a leadership role and I’m very proud of her for stepping up.”
Against Kemp in a 38-20 loss, the Lady Bulldogs just could not find the bucket, making six field goals after attempting 40.
Love had six points, Lindsey Hornaday five, Parker four, Davis three and Spears two.
After playing Tuesday at home, the Lady Bulldogs will host Cumby at Ballard Gym Friday.
