The Quitman Lady Bulldogs got back into the win column last Tuesday at home with a solid 44-18 win over Grand Saline.
After being down 3-1 early, Ava Burroughs hit a bucket for Quitman to tie the score 3-3. The Lady Bulldogs reeled off 14 more consecutive points until Grand Saline finally scored deep in the second quarter making it 17-5. Julia Simpkins hit a three-point shot making it 20-5. The half ended on a beautiful Lindsey Hornaday pass to Burroughs who made the basket giving Quitman a 23-7 lead.
The Quitman defense stuffed the Lady Indians at every turn and gave one of their best defensive efforts of the season. The Lady Bulldogs came out running in the second half with Madyson Pence hitting a bucket and pair of free throws along with a Maddy Whitehurst 10-foot jump shot giving Quitman a 31-7 edge. Burroughs scored two more times and Quitman had a 35-13 lead after three quarters.
Whitehurst and Burroughs buckets and another triple by Simpkins gave Quitman an early fourth quarter 42-13 lead and the Lady Bulldogs coasted to the win giving them a 3-5 district 12-3A record.
Burroughs led the scoring with 15 points and added 10 rebounds while Whitehurst added nine points and five rebounds. Simpkins and Pence each had eight points while Kynlee Love had two and Shelby Hayes and Hornaday one each.
