Lady Bulldogs take consolation
After falling to a tough Hawkins team in the opening round, the Quitman Lady Bulldog defense and offense came alive to storm past Winona 64-14 and then handle Ore City 33-23 to win consolation at the Union Grove Tournament.
Against Ore City in the consolation final, Quitman’s defense held the Lady Rebels to just two points in the first quarter while the Lady Bulldogs put up 10 points. Quitman took an 18-10 lead into intermission. Scoring was slow for both teams in the second half as Quitman put up a 15-13 edge to take the game 33-23.
Senior Maddy Whitehurst with 11 points and 12 rebounds led the Lady Bulldogs along with sophomore Reiny Luman who scored 10. Ava Burroughs and Madison Pence each had four points with Julia Simpkins hitting two. Shelby Hayes and Lindsey Hornaday each added a point. Hayes also had five rebounds and three steals. Quitman dominated the boards with 35 rebounds to just 10 total rebounds for Ore City.
In Friday’s 64-14 romp over Winona, four Lady Bulldogs hit in double figures. Burroughs scored 16 points, Simpkins 14, Luman 11 and Whitehurst 10. Pence and Hayes each had six and Carli Spears added one.
In the tournament opener, Quitman fell to Hawkins 46-28. Hawkins led at the half 25-10 and 39-20 going into the final quarter. Hayes led Quitman with eight points with Whitehurst adding six, Hornaday five and Spears four.
For Hawkins, Lyn Davis had 14 points, Logan Jaco 11 and Alyssa Eddington eight.
