Mineola captured a bidistrict volleyball championship Thursday in Paris, taking Hooks in four games to advance to the area playoff against Tatum.

A young Hooks team gave the Lady Jackets a battle, but Mineola pulled away in the end to keep the season alive.

Mineola built leads of 10-5 and 20-11 in game one only to have Hooks battle back from a 22-14 deficit to make it 22-21.

Mineola got to game point on two Hooks errors only to see the Lady Hornets make it 24-23. But a Hooks spike attempt hit the net, giving Mineola the win.

Hooks was undeterred and built a quick 10-2 lead in game two that was still seven points at 17-10 before Mineola rallied for seven straight to tie things.

Hooks got the next four to keep the Lady Jackets at bay, winning 25-20.

Game three was a battle early, working to an 8-8 score before Mineola went on a 5-0 run to take a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the night.

The margin grew to 18-10, though Hooks would not go away, getting within 20-18 and 21-19.

After a Hooks kill made it 23-20, Mineola, the Lady Hornets’ next two scoring attempts missed the court giving Mineola a 25-20 win and a 2-1 lead in the match.

Game three was almost all Mineola and featured the scoring of Brittany Pickle, Valeria Garcia and Tahjae Black as Mineola forged a 13-3 lead. Pickle hit four scoring shots during the run, Black had a kill and a service ace during a 7-0 stretch, and Garcia got the Lady Jackets on the board with her net play twice.

Hooks got no closer than six points the rest of the way at 19-13.

After a Garcia kill made it 23-14 Mineola, the Lady Hornets again ended the game with two misfires.

The result propelled Mineola into the second round of the Class 3A state playoffs against Tatum.
