The initial showing of the 2021 Mineola Lady Jackets holds much promise for the upcoming season. Despite the 48-25 loss at the hands of the visiting Bullard squad, there were plenty of positive takeaways from their initial effort.

Foremost among those takeaways was the manner in which the Lady Jackets came out in the second half. It was a whole different team than started the contest. Beginning in the third quarter, the Lady Jackets trapped, harassed and frustrated the visitors. The tenacious hounding forced consecutive turnovers by Bullard and largely took them out of their normal offensive routines.

Interestingly, each team registered 13 points in the second half.

Most obviously, however, in the Lady Jackets’ play was simply a better sense of the game. A greater appreciation for the nuisances of basketball – not a small thing – was evident. From ball movement to court spacing to looking for that last pass, the Lady Jackets program has matured in the off season.

Individuals also gave hints of solid basketball to come. Paris Spigner has joined Ava Johnson as a player who brings great energy to the court. Macy Fischer and Kapri Riley both appear to be much more comfortable on the court, while Jayla and Kyra Jackson are at home on the wings.

The Lady Jackets will get plenty of pre-district action to build their team prowess before beginning district Dec. 14. The near-term schedule includes tournament action at Mt. Vernon, New Diana and Grand Saline.
