Lady Jackets defeat Winona
Mineola trailed Winona 11-17 in the first set Friday when coach Tashara Stephens called timeout. The Lady Jackets responded to her message. They would drop the set, but not before tying the Lady Wildcats at 20 and 23 apiece.
Undeterred by the loss, Mineola built upon the momentum, parlaying it into a four-set win, 23-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-19 over Winona.
No play better exemplifies the effort required for the comeback than that of Gracie Finley, on one of her four digs of the match. She reacted to a short tip over the net with a quick, reflexive kick off her foot to keep the ball aloft.
The Lady Jackets went up 12-10 in the second set and fed off the joyous energy such a point gave them.
Mineola libero Kenleigh Aguirre led the back row with 17 digs, Mylee Fischer 13 and Olivia Hughes six.
Hughes and Fischer set up 12 assists apiece, converted by Finley for 14 kills, Fischer and Hughes six each.
Hughes and Aguirre both nailed two aces, while Kloey Garcia had one during the Lady Jackets’ longest scoring stretch of 8 points to go up 11-5 in the third set.
