Lady Jackets dominate GS
The Mineola Lady Jackets travelled to Grand Saline and dominated the Lady Indians, 72-17, in the opening game of district play Dec. 17. The Jackets’ unyielding pressure created open shots and lay-ins throughout the contest, while their mid- and long-range shooting was on target.
As can happen, due to the lop-sided nature of the game, play became ragged near the end as frustration gripped the Lady Indians. Both sides engaged in unnecessary contact with elbows, knees and feet.
One characteristic of the Mineola side which will become clear in district play is their relentless effort. Despite the nature of the game, the Lady Jackets continued to play and play hard throughout.
Of note, it appears as though Sabria Dean’s adjustments to her jump shot were spot-on, as she had another excellent shooting night, from 3-point range and mid-range. Also, the Jackets’ transition between the press and the break was as smooth as it has been all season.
On negative side of the notecard, it is yet apparent the Jackets need to work on their finishing game at the basket, off rebounds as well as on the break. Additional attention will also likely be placed on securing rebounds and passes with both hands. These improvements are minor adjustments at this point in the schedule. Addressing them now will produce close wins late in the season.
