Lady Jackets earn consolation at Athens
The Mineola Lady Jackets made a huge splash by defeating 4-A schools Liberty-Eylau and Chapel Hill (Tyler) en route to the Consolation Championship at the Athens Invitational Dec. 5-7.
While giving the Jacksonville Maidens all they wanted in the opening game of the tourney, Mineola fell in a close game 52-50. After the initial set-back, the Lady Jackets stormed the Liberty-Eylau Lady Leopards, 79-58, to get back on the winning track.
The convincing win lined them up for a 3-A match-up against the Lady Tigers of Arp. Coach Gibson’s charges prevailed 49-18 to advance to the consolation title game.
In the Saturday afternoon duel with 4-A Chapel Hill (Tyler) the Lady Jackets dominated. They turned in a 50-28 victory and claimed the consolation trophy.
Based on the quality of teams regularly invited to the Athens Invitational, the Mineola faithful can draw nothing but positives from the stellar performance of the Lady Jackets in the tournament.
