Lady Jackets end regular season with 52-36 win over Quitman


In the final game of regular season district play and the final regular season home game for Mineola, the Lady Jackets used a hot start to earn a 52-36 victory over the Quitman Lady Dogs last Tuesday night.

In the opening six minutes of the game the Lady Jackets overwhelmed the Lady Bulldogs with their pressure defense causing multiple turnovers. After a 6-0 run leaving the score at 16-6 Quitman was forced to call a timeout.

Out of the timeout Quitman took some of the momentum back as they scored four straight points leaving the score at 16-10. Quitman’s Molly Tanner capped off the four run with a mid-range jump shot as the quarter came to an end.

In the second quarter Mineola’s Mehgan Brewington got in to the action as she hit a long jump shot and then Sabria Dean followed up with a score of her own. With Quitman down 22-10 half-way through the quarter the Lady Dogs went on another 4-0 run as Tanner scored again on a jump shot to end the run. Dean and Tanner would then trade baskets as Dean scored three times and Tanner scored once before the quarter ended, at halftime Mineola led by 11 at 29-18.

Playing in her final game in the Jackets’ nest (Mineola home gym) senior Vanessa Spurgeon scored first for Mineola in the third quarter. She followed that score with a three-pointer from the left wing as Mineola went on a 5-0 run. Cyndi Butler got in to the action for Mineola as she scored five straight including a buzzer beating three-pointer that gave Mineola a 44-24 lead heading in to the fourth quarter.

Mineola went on to win as Dean led Mineola with a double-double scoring 24 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. In her final home game Spurgeon scored 14 points. Butler added eight, while Brewington had four. Rosie Marquez also playing in her last home basketball game, added three rebounds.
