Lady Jackets end season with loss to Chapel Hill

Posted

The Mineola Lady Jackets concluded their basketball season Friday at home, falling to Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill 61–37.

Mineola seniors Jaylen Gardner, Tahjae Black, Catherine McLemore and Brittany Pickle were honored before the game.

The seniors made up the starting lineup along with junior Mylee Fischer, who scored the game’s first two points.

The Lady Jackets held a lead for a couple of minutes before the Lady Devils started hitting threes, which accounted for their first nine points.

Kapri Riley closed the gap to 9-7 with a three.

Mineola trailed 11–7 after the opening period.

Trading threes for twos quickly gave Chapel Hill a 20-11 margin. After another Riley three, the scoring dried up and the Lady Jackets were bedeviled on defense, giving up ten straight points.

Chapel Hill led 39-16 at the break.

Mineola came out of the locker room determined to fight back. They quickly scored the first five points on a hook shot in the lane from Black and a transition three by Gardner, her first of four deep balls.

The lead was cut to 41-21, but the Lady Jackets would not make a larger dent in the margin.

The aggressive defense, which flummoxed other opponents, backfired against a quicker team and fouls plagued Mineola in the second half, sending the Lady Devils to the line early and often for eight free points.

The Lady Jackets trailed 49-25 after three quarters. Both teams scored a dozen more in the final quarter.

All four seniors returned to the floor late in the fourth, and with 22 seconds remaining, Mineola head coach Alan Wilson gave them a proper exit from their final appearance in white and orange, subbing each out one at a time. They were met with respectable applause and cheers.

Gardner led the Lady Jackets with 13 points. Black added 10 points, Riley had eight, Mylee Fischer four and McLemore two. Pickle, who missed most of the season with a leg injury, had a rebound.
