The Lady Jackets dropped a hard-fought match to the Lady Wildcats of Rains High School last Tuesday, and were dismissed in a straight set by the Quitman Lady Bulldogs on Friday.
Coming off a win over Lone Oak in the previous week, the Lady Jackets were ready to face Rains, and jumped out in front by taking the first game 29-27. Although the Lady Wildcats led throughout game two, Mineola was always within striking range closing to within two points of the lead twice at 16-18 and 22-24. Rains took game two 22-25.
Unable to maintain the tempo of the match, the Lady Jackets fell in game three 12 – 25. Despite maintaining an early lead through the first half of game four, Mineola fell 17 – 25.
Not reflected on the scorecard are the positive energy, outright hustle and aggressiveness demonstrated by the Lady Jackets in the Rains match. As Coach VanCleave commented, “We hustled across the board and did a good job of making things happen even when it wasn’t going our way.” She added it was one of those nights when the team deserved a win because of the way in which they competed.
The second match of the week, against a highly skilled Quitman team was not as competitive. The Lady Bulldogs took the match in straight set: 25-12, 25-9, 25-14.
Mineola wraps up their district play Tuesday, Oct. 23 when they travel to Edgewood.
