Lady Jackets one-hitter halts Quitman
Mineola Lady Jacket pitcher Anna Westberry enjoyed another stellar effort, recording an 11-strike out, one hit, complete game April 9 in a 10-1 win against Quitman. The Lady Jackets supported Westberry with 13 base hits.
The first two innings were indicative of the action on the night. Westberry put the Bulldogs down in order in the first and second while recording three strike outs.
A workman-like offensive performance characterized the Lady Jackets at the plate. In the first, Emily Wiley beat out an infield hit. Sophia Lopez reached on a bunt when the throw to first sailed high over the first baseman’s head. Wiley and Lopez executed a nice double steal. Lauren Simmons laid down a bunt and was thrown out at first. The follow-up attempt to get Wiley coming home was high and Mineola scored. Isabella Tresca grounded a ball right up the middle to score Lopez.
In the second, Claudia Barriga opened with a single. A long single to center field by Kaitlyn Burrell, an RBI single by Lopez which just cleared the Quitman shortstop, and a double by Simmons down the left field line, put three runs on the board.
The Lady Jackets went on to score one run in the third, three in the fifth and one in the sixth. The consistent offensive performance wore down the visiting Lady Bulldogs, while Westberry continued to handle the Quitman line-up.
Wiley, Tresca and Breanna Wilmouth all had two hits on the night.
