Lady Jackets sweep, remain unbeaten

The Mineola Lady Jackets improved their record to 6-0 on the season with a win at Gladewater last Tuesday. The three-game sweep (25-17, 25-13, 25-22) was a study in contrasts. At times the Lady Jackets looked unbeatable with fluid floor movement and spot-on timing. At some junctures however, they appeared to lose their focus and were unable to string points together.

Mineola used two short runs to secure the game one win. Trailing by a point at 6-7, back-to-back aces by Madison Bloodworth and scores by Tahjae Black and Gracie Finely restored a Mineola lead.

Behind the service of Mylee Fischer, the Lady Jackets went on a four-point run which featured two kills by Valerie Garcia. That streak opened a nine-point advantage.

A Brittany Pickle kill following a Fischer drop shot ended game one.

Mineola scored the last eight points of game two in a decisive win.

The Gladewater side appeared confused and their structure dissolved in the face of Mineola’s aggressive, offensive volleyball.

After taking a quick 6-0 lead in game three, the Jackets lost their focus.

Gladewater tallied their only two leads of the night at 14-15 and 20-19, but in each case Mineola responded.

The final points of game three – Bloodworth ace, Fischer block, Garcia drop shot and Fischer ace – highlighted the range of weapons available to Coach TaShara Everett this year.

The Jackets will have to hone those offensive skills and solve the lapses in attention before district play.
