After a 2-4 start and a tough eight-point loss against the Mt. Vernon Tigers, the Mineola Lady Jackets bounced back over the weekend to win the Union Grove Tournament going 4-0.
The Lady Jackets won four games in three days to take the tournament crown. Sophomore point guard Sabria Dean won Tournament MVP as she led the Lady Jackets in scoring each game while senior guard Vanessa Spurgeon was voted to the All-Tournament Team.
The tournament started Thursday evening with the Lady Jackets defeating Paris Home School 57-33. Dean led the Lady Jackets in scoring with16 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals. Freshman forward Tahjae Black also had a good game with eight points and 6 rebounds.
On Friday the Lady Jackets played twice winning both games. First the Lady Jackets beat the Joaquin Lady Rams 35-30.
Then the Lady Jackets beat the Hawkins Lady Hawks 67-46. Dean had arguably her best game of the tournament against Hawkins as she led all players in scoring with 23 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Spurgeon chipped in nicely with 11 points.
In the championship game the Lady Jackets faced the host Union Grove Lions. Dean again had another great performance as she poured in her second consecutive 20-plus point game of the season. Dean had 21 points, six rebounds four assists and three steals. Spurgeon had seven points and 3 rebounds. Jessiah Riley and Tahjae Black both had good games as well each scoring six points apiece with Riley also adding eight rebounds.
