After falling behind 28-27 going into the final quarter, the Yantis Lady Owls stormed past Cumby in the final minutes to secure a 47-42 victory last Tuesday.
Ashton Burnett poured in a game-high 21 points including five thre-pointers. Montana Wetzel added nine points while Maggie and Maddie Hooker controlled the boards for Yantis.
The Lady Owls took a 14-9 first quarter advantage on a trio of three point bombs, two from Burnett and one by Wetzel. However, the Lady Owls only managed two points in the second quarter as Cumby took a 17-16 lead at the half.
Yantis kept pace in the third quarter as Burnett hit on four free throws and a field goal but Cumby still led by one, 28-27 going into the final quarter.
After Cumby took a 30-27 lead, Burnett hit on another three-pointer to knot the score 30-30 with six minutes to go. Another triple by Burnett, with 3:28 remaining in the game put the Lady Owls up 35-34 followed by a pair of Wetzel free throws gave Yantis a 37-34 lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way.
Two more Wetzel free throws and a bucket by Maggie Hooker with 32 seconds left in the game put the Lady Owls up 41-36. Each team would add a free throw apiece as Yantis hung on for the 42-37 win.
Yantis raises their season record to 9-9 with district play beginning at Fruitvale Jan. 9.
