Lady Panthers pull away from All Saints
Coming off a humbling performance in the Eustace Tourney, the Alba-Golden Lady Panthers chalked up a solid victory over the All Saints Lady Trojans Nov. 25. A strong inside game, with Hannah Wright and Kallie Wright contributing 13 points apiece, paced the Lady Panthers to a 47-35 victory.
The Lady Trojans presented Alba-Golden some unique challenges. Specifically, how to attack a disciplined 2-3 zone defense and how to counter the play of the Lady Trojans’ playmaker, senior Madeline Perkins, were foremost concerns.
The Lady Panthers excelled at patiently finding the smallest of seams in the All Saints zone defense. A beautiful assist from Bella Crawford, who found Kallie Wright under the basket with a laser-like pass, exemplified the home team’s offensive effort.
Alba-Golden opened up a 9-point lead early in the second quarter. Just before half, the Lady Trojans closed the score to 24-17 with consecutive 3-pointers.
The third quarter saw long periods of frantic action, but with little scoring.
The Lady Panthers worked hard to minimize Perkins’ production, a task ably fulfilled by Lady Panther freshman Cacie Lennon.
The game remained close with All Saints closing the differential to six points mid-way through the final stanza.
With just under a minute to play, Crimson Bryant pulled down a critical defensive rebound. Crawford hit a pair of free throws, and Hannah Wright secured the win with a final driving bucket.
There were moments when the home crowd desperately wanted the Lady Panthers to put the game away, but it was difficult to dispatch the Lady Trojans. A huge rebounding advantage and tough inside play saw Alba-Golden through to victory.
