Lady Panthers tough it out

Fall to Bullard, go 2-2 in ET Shootout

The Alba-Golden Lady Panthers had a productive week as they began preparations for district play which is just around the corner.

The Lady Panthers faced Bullard last Tuesday and competed in the Brownsboro East Texas Shootout during the weekend.

In Tuesday’s game, Alba-Golden lost to Bullard 59-28. According to Head Coach Blake Hamrick, the Lady Panthers did not play well at all but rebounded with a good showing in the tournament, going 2-2 overall.

“Overall it was a good weekend for us,” said Hamrick. “Obviously we have to work on finishing games and protecting leads. If you can’t finish games in the fourth quarter it doesn’t matter if you play a great first half, which I thought we did all weekend.”

The Lady Panthers handled Harmony in the first game, winning 54-22. Shelby Wright led all scorers with 16 points followed by Gracie Pendergrass with 11 points.

Alba-Golden continued their strong play in a 66-65 victory against Tyler Chapel Hill in the second game. The Lady Panthers had a 15-point lead at halftime but Tyler fought back before Ginny Carson secured the win on a buzzer-beating layup. Briana Weissert and Wright both had 17 points.

In the third game, Alba-Golden fell to tournament host Brownsboro 63-48. The Lady Panthers held a lead at the end of the third period but were unable to finish. Wright finished with 19 points and Pendergrass added 11 points.

Unfortunately, the Lady Panthers were unable to hold another halftime lead and fell to Winnsboro 47-39. Grace Bizzell had 12 points with Wright adding 10 points.

“I thought Briana Weissert was the MVP of the tournament for us. Her hustle plays really gave us the spark we needed when things weren’t going our way and she continued to be a leader even in adversity. District starts Tuesday and I think our tough non-district schedule will help us out moving forward.”
